The Tidal Champion's Abilities:
Tier 1:
Tier 2:
Tier 3:
Total cost: 26 AP
Tier 1:
- Strong Swimmer: A large lung capacity, good endurance, and a lot of practice, has made Tidal Champion into a swimmer worthy of his self-given name, able to travel through rough water with ease. (Skill Level 1: Heightened Motion in Water; cost 1 AP)
- Splash Course: It was on one of his very first hunting trips as a young man… Xue watched, stalked, his prey; a Bull Elephant Seal (not to be confused with real world bull elephant seals, this is a tusked seal with a long snout used to constrict and catch penguins and large fish, which it eats). Xue watched as, on land, the beast was fierce and territorial, fighting off other males for breeding rights, but, in the sea, they caught their prey, but had to bring it to the surface, before killing it. Realizing that these creatures (and most creatures, honestly) were much less of a threat in the water, Xue came to the conclusion that it would be beneficial to learn at least the very basics of waterbending, to better trap his prize. Tidal Champion has the basic ability to push and pull on the water, though it is mostly harmless and is only used to move fishing nets (or himself) through the water. (Skill Level 1: Waterbending Basics; cost 2)
- Trident Toss: Throwing a trident is not as easy as throwing a spear or a javelin, its multiple prongs and narrower flukes make it far less aerodynamic. But, practice can allow a professional to overcome that drawback. The Champion can throw his Trident of La at an enemy. While easy enough to dodge, this ability is still a reliable ranged attack up to a distance of 35 feet, although he must retrieve his trident after using this ability. (Skill Level 1: Ranged Attack; cost 3)
- Fetch: Using his waterbending, The Champion pulls on the flask inside the Trident of La, causing it to scrape along the ground until it reaches his feet. This ability is useful for if he gets disarmed, the weapon is stolen, or if he uses his Trident Toss abilities, allowing him to retrieve the weapon without having to run all over the battlefield. While designed specifically for his weapon (or rather, the weapon was designed with the flask inside specifically for this ability), this ability can also be used on other water-filled objects as well, not that that has any use in combat. Though this ability is possible at any distance, it requires much concentration, which means, while he is in battle its effective range is no more than 20 feet. (Skill Level 1: Retrieve Lost Weapon; cost 4)
Tier 2:
- Steady as the Coursing River: Upgraded from Strong Swimmer, this is the basis of Champion’s hunting expertise. Essentially, with enough practice, Champion has become accustomed to underwater life. That is to say, he is just as able underwater as he is on land. Capable of keeping his balance and maintaining a good sense of direction within a three dimensional space, suspended in the middle of the sea. In combat, this means he is not disoriented by waves or whirlpools that would make a normal person sick to their stomach. Simply put, while he's swimming, his head's not. (Skill Level 2: Maintaining Sense of Direction in Water; cost 2)
- Trident Throw: Upgraded from Trident Toss. With additional practice and power, Champion can now throw a lot further, and with a lot more force. The sharp, piercing tips of his trident help add to the throw’s destructive power. The attack is still easily dodged, but the force behind it enables it to reach further distances. The throw has an effective range of 60 feet, and can break through standard defenses (stone and ice) up to 20 feet. (Skill Level 2: Ranged Attack with Armor Piercing; cost 4)
- Reverse Trident Throw: Upgraded from Fetch. By focusing, The Champion can bring his trident to him after losing it. The trident will now fly through the air, and back to its owner at a distance of 35 feet. Anyone standing directly between the trident and Champion are liable to get hit by the returning weapon. However, because of how little water is actually within the trident, it moves slowly through the air, and is easily dodged, or blocked, or even caught. Even so, just like a returning boomerang, this attack is highly likely to catch the opponent off-guard (they are usually facing the user, back to the weapon). (Skill Level 2: Weapon Retrieval with Ranged Surprise Attack; cost 6)
Tier 3:
- Lurking in the Deep: Upgraded from Steady as the Coursing River, now Champion utilizes waterbending in conjunction to his swimming skill. With practice he is now fully combat-able while underwater, capable of swinging his trident without losing his balance. He also uses waterbending to propel himself quickly when underwater, and keep himself steady. And because he is not flailing his arms and legs, there is no ripple or splash effect on the surface when he moves, thus allowing him to cover distances quickly and stealthily. Essentially, he could be anywhere beneath the surface, and his prey on the land would never know. (Skill Level 3: Sneaking and Pouncing in Water; cost 4)
